Episode Transcript

Meredith Matics: Welcome to Business Reflections with your host Meredith Matics, and we are here to reflect on the business topics that are affecting you today and how you can better run your business. We’re excited to pass the mic to Jeanne Carmody, CEO and Founder of J. Carmody Inc, on this bonus episode of Business Reflections. Jeanne shares some her top business tips around knowing your customer and communication practices.

Jeanne Carmody: To know your customer 100% is that you've got to know your audience and that takes practice.

It takes different levels of communication primarily. One of our target audiences is high school, athletic directors, band directors, spirit shop managers, and also collegiate administrators. With regard to promotional products magnets and decals that item is not high on their priority list. In fact their responsibilities have shifted toward keeping students engaged in academics, practices, rehearsals, and other gatherings. You've got to let them know that your light is still on, in that comes down to communication so that when the climate does reverse that you're in the forefront.

Some of the ways is by composing, scheduling, and sending email campaigns through an online marketing company. Telephone calls, so we pick up the telephone. It's never trendy and telephone conversations always make good impressions. We distribute postcards or direct mail type of printed material. Hit them at all ends. Through digital, the postal service and picking up the telephone. Just constant reminders that our light is still on when situations change and they're able to make product purchases.

We have to keep in mind that engaging in an entirely new market or industry, you follow the same process of developing new customers, building relationships, gaining trust through job performance and learning best practices, unique to these agencies.

Take advantage of virtual instructions. Webinars offered by professionals because leaders love to share their expertise. Zoom, Microsoft teams, plus other meeting collaboration platforms have opened the world to learn topics from some of the best and most meetings are free.  Professionals in all industries love to share their knowledge and trade.

Keeping your websites and social media channels a reflection of you. This is where you, your products, your services shine, and make the information relatable yet simple because let's face it consumers choose with their pocketbooks.

Always remember to look back so you propel forward. When I would get discouraged or make errors or question a decision, my mom would say look what you have learned. You've invented and created new products. You've received patent protection by U.S. And Canadian agencies. You've arranged a vendor agreement with Walmart. You've trademarked a company name and you have license agreements with universities. Whenever I doubt myself, I look back and immediately I propel forward.
